Support for Shari's Kidney-Pancreas Transplant

Donation protected
Shari Murgado knows how to bring humor and grace to difficult situations. Diagnosed with Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetes at age 11, she’s endured many hardships. Somehow she’s managed a positive attitude through years of health challenges related to this chronic illness. This includes countless doctor’s visits, multiple daily injections, insulin pump therapy, hospitalizations, and treatments for complications from gastroparesis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and diabetic retinopathy.

It’s time for her to reach out and receive support in a new, unexpected chapter. At just 32 years old, Shari requires dialysis and two organ transplants in order to survive.

Shari has entered End Stage Renal Disease. This devastating news came last year after two stays in the ICU where she almost lost her life to a seizure and acute organ failure.

Currently, Shari alternates between medical stability (maintaining work-life balance while managing increasingly severe symptoms) and acute kidney crisis. A kidney transplant is necessary for survival. Doctors also consider Shari an excellent candidate for a pancreas transplant.

Shari has already been through months of costly and time-consuming testing in order to be placed on the national kidney-pancreas registry. She is hopeful to find a match in a living kidney donor, but recognizes that a lengthy, likely years-long wait for a deceased kidney-pancreas donor is also possible. Soon, Shari will have surgery to place a catheter in her abdomen to start daily peritoneal dialysis. If a living kidney donor is found, Shari will undergo a second surgery for kidney transplant and a third surgery will be required when a pancreas becomes available.

Shari faces extended absences from work and sky-high medical expenses to cover dialysis, surgeries, recovery, doctor’s visits, and the immunosuppressants she’ll need to take daily for the rest of her life. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to carry her through this time of medical necessity. It would take only 250 people contributing $100 each to reach our goal. Any amount is appreciated.
