My name is Kanautica Promises Zayre-Brown, and I’m asking for support as I recover from my long-awaited gender-affirming surgery, which I was finally able to receive after nearly a decade of fighting for my right to care.
For years, I have been known as someone who shows up for others, with joy, love, advocacy, and unwavering encouragement. I am someone who pours deeply into community. And now, I am in a moment where I need community to pour into me.
Where I Am Now: I recently underwent vulvoplasty, a surgery that is critical to my physical and emotional well-being.
This was a procedure I was denied during the seven years I was incarcerated, despite medical necessity and ongoing advocacy.
Receiving this care is life-changing, but the reality is: the healing process is long, intensive, and expensive.
Because of the physical pain and the recovery schedule, I cannot work right now.
At the same time, I am:
• Attending school full-time with the goal of becoming an attorney and legal advocate, and caring for Akari, whom I am currently responsible for as part of a Temporary Safety Plan.
I am doing my best to build a stable, loving, and consistent life for both of us, but recovery requires time, medication, follow-up appointments, and specialized aftercare support that is not covered by insurance.
What Your Support Helps Cover
Your donations will go directly toward ongoing recovery expenses including:
• Follow-up medical appointments
• Transportation to and from specialist care
• Wound care, hygiene supplies, and surgical aftercare products
• Pelvic floor and physical therapy
• Medication and pain management
• Post-op garments and medical equipment
• Lost income during recovery
• Safe and stable care for Akari while I heal
These are necessary to ensure my body heals correctly and to prevent complications.
Why This Matters
My fight for this surgery was part of a larger battle that helped transform transgender healthcare in North Carolina.
In Kanautica Zayre-Brown v. NC Department of Adult Correction, a federal court recognized that denying gender-affirming surgery was unconstitutional, a ruling that will help countless trans people in the years to come.
Now that I finally have the care I fought for, I need help to fully recover, remain stable, and move forward.
