Kourageous Kurt's story begins in January of 2013 when he was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 8 years old.
Kurt was a baseball player and in the 3rd grade, when he was diagnosed and he was hospitalized for over a month straight. For the first 6 months, as Kurt battled for his life, he was in and out of the hospital for 4 day stays every couple of weeks and as you can imagine the medical expense of this fight against cancer started to really rack up and cause a severe strain on his family's finances.
Mom and Dad both rotated days and nights staying with Kurt during this time in the hospital which also caused them to take off from work or work less on a regular basis. Family savings quickly dried up! This page is not something we wanted to set up, but we feel now we have reached our ability to cope financially and have no other options! :(
Thank goodness the family does have health insurance and most of this high cost is being absorbed through their health plan but it was not long before limits were reached in coverage causing costs to then be out of pocket and many things that were covered before must now be paid for by the family! Many of these costs are well beyond the means of the family to handle and end up on credit cards causing even more financial stress!
Kurt's treatment is on-going at this time and is expected to be from 3-5 years depending on his treatment plan. So far Kurt is doing well and has returned to many of the things he loved prior to cancer but his medical expenses will continue for the foreseeable future.
