Hey guys!
If you don’t know Kortney - she’s amazing, super strong, like seriously, she’s fit. She’s the cutest blonde, 39 years old, has three adorable, wild, and rambunctious kids - 12, 10, and 9. She is married to her best friend, Brian, and they have built a beautiful life together! She has always been a super athlete but over the last 8 years has channeled that love of being active into running a CrossFit gym, coaching her kids sports teams, and helping others any way she can. You truly will NOT meet a better person out there!
It was a huge shock when she was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer this last week. If you know Kort, you know she can beat this! You also know she would never ask for help.. but we are ready to help her fight this battle and one of the things we can do is provide some financial relief!
So here’s the backstory:
This whole process has been a bit of a whirlwind so I'll start at the beginning.
Back in July Kortney volunteered to go help serve at church camp with her kiddos. The night she got there she thought she had tweaked her back and couldn't sleep or find a comfortable position when she laid down. The next day was better, but when night rolled around the pain was persistent again. This went on for a few days, then the pain wouldn't go away at all. She tried several different things, resting, icing, heating, chiropractor, and still wasn't finding any relief. Her doctor had her do a CT scan which showed some issues in her back. They started with a steroid shot but the pain wasn't going away.. so she scheduled to try some ozone shots.
It was a lot of hurry up to wait when scheduling these appointments. In the meantime she is getting very little sleep and it's getting harder to stay active and comfortable. She received two ozone shots, and when that didn't provide relief, they did another CT scan. During this scan the doctor noted that eight lymph nodes were severely enlarged (and were enlarged in the previous scan - which caused concern.) Blood work was immediately ordered, but everything looked great. They realized the swollen lymph nodes is what was causing the nerve pain in her back - but now we had to find out what was causing the swollen lymph nodes.
This led to more testing, which then led doctors to believe she most likely had lymphoma.
So they scheduled a lymph node biopsy that was performed on November 4th. (They also found two blood clots in her lungs during a chest CT - which have since been dissolved. Praise Jesus.)
The biopsy revealed that the lymph node was NEGATIVE for lymphoma and leukemia but POSITIVE for cervical cancer. Everyone was thrown for a loop again. She had just been to her gynecologist and everything looked good.
After this news Kortney met with her gynecologist once more. He did more testing, blood work, and biopsies. The cells in her cervix were only pre-cancer and everything still looked great, which was a surprise to everyone - again! It just wasn’t adding up. He had her schedule another appointment for further testing and set her up with a gynecologic oncologist in Lubbock. At this point it was looking like stage 3 cervical cancer.
This doctor did more biopsies and a PET scan. Once those results came back they had discovered a cancerous lymph node in her chest and moved the cancer up to stage 4b cervical cancer, a place she didn’t want to be. She will begin chemotherapy soon and will take those treatments once every three weeks for a total of six treatments, then they will reevaluate. Her and Brian really love their doctor and feel really good about the plan they have in place.
Please be praying specifically for the chemo to kill the cancer in her body and for her body to respond well to treatment.
This is all we know (medically) so far - Kort will update as she knows more.
We ALSO know that Kortney is incredibly strong, she has a fighting spirit, she's unmatched when it comes to mental toughness, she is a believer and talks to God daily - we know she can do this! If anyone can - it’s this girl!
She's a mom. She's a wife, sister, daughter, and aunt. She's a friend. She's a coach. She's a business owner. She’s her kids taxi. She’s the go-to when you need advice, hugs, anything. She wears many hats but this treatment plan is going to be her main job for the next few months. Which is why we are asking that you help lighten the financial burden of medical bills, travel expenses, and everything else that will add up during this time.
Kortney and Brian are some of the most generous givers out there - of their time and of their money.
Please help them if you feel led to, and if you aren't able to, please PLEASE pray for them, their family, and their friends as they walk through this tough journey.
