My name is Teylor, and our one of a kind catahoula rescue mutt, Kona, is currently receiving emergency vet care to overcome Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (ITP) which caused the platelets in her blood to become dangerously low. She was admitted June 3rd for a couple of days to monitor her platelet levels in a safe environment (aka padded kennel) to prevent her accidentally getting bumps/bruises that could cause spontaneous internal bleeding and monitor for anemia or signs of bleeding in her respiratory system and brain. Her platelets were around 10,000 Monday at the vet after the second recheck, and today were below 3,000 (240k-500k is considered a normal range) the goal will be for them to reach at least 40,000 in order to be able to safely clot blood and come home. After additional tests and diagnostic imaging to rule out secondary underlying causes and started a combination of two immunosuppressants, steroids and a chemotherapy drug in order to stop her immune system from attacking her platelets and encourage the bone marrow to produce new ones. She will need medications for at least a few months and frequent vet check-ins for labs to check platelets levels, but we are hopeful she will make a full recovery and are willing to do whatever it takes to help her!
I knew Kona was a very unique dog when I saw her, and the past five years our family has grown to love her quirky personality so we didn't think twice about the cost of care with such a bright outlook for her to bounce back from this. Our family has had a very challenging year and would be extremely grateful if anyone feels inclined to contribute to this fundraiser to help offset some of her her $6,000 life saving emergency care costs. We would greatly appreciate if everyone could send paw-sitive vibes and thoughts her way as Kona starts her journey to recovery!
Thank you for taking the time to read Kona's story.
