Kolkata Indian Music School Project

Donation protected

The children at The Mathieson Music School in Kolkata, India, are the poorest of the poor.  I have the incredible opportunity to volunteer, as part of a small team of student musicians from Strode College, to teach and share music with the children.

As a trombone and vocal specialist at Wells Cathedral School Music Academy and ex head chorister at Wells Cathedral I am really looking forward to sharing my musical knowledge with children who have not been as fortunate in their access to education as me.  I think I will learn an incredible amount from them too.

I will be fundraising towards my costs to join the project in the coming months by performing in concerts at Strode College and in my local Somerset area.  The project takes place in February 2020 and I require the funds as soon as possible to secure a place.

I would be truly thankful for any support you are able to give.  For me this will be a unique chance to work with underprivileged children who have also been given a rare chance, to explore their musical talents at the Mathieson School.  I hope to assist them on their musical journey and in the process gain a better understanding of their lives and the richness their culture and music.

Anup Kumar Biswas (director of the Mathieson Music School) grew up in West Bengal where his musical talent was first recognised. He started to play cello aged 10, before making his debut for All-India Radio and Television aged 16. He went on to study with Jacqueline du Pre and has since performed concerts all over the world, including in the UK at The Royal Albert Hall, St Paul's Cathedral and Grays Inn (where in addition to a Vivaldi concerto he played an Indian raga at the personal request of HRH Prince of Wales).  In 1994 Biswas established the Mathieson Music School with the aim of: 'Giving deprived Indian children a rounded education and a future through music'.  The school is funded by the Mathieson Music trust a registered charity in India and the UK.
