Hi, thanks for taking the time to read about our son Kobe and why we are asking for your help.
Kobe is our 9-year-old son. He has autism, ADHD and severe anxiety.
Life can be tough for Kobe. He is such a kind, smart and beautiful boy, but everyday things can be a real struggle for him, and we spend most of our day trying to help him cope with meltdowns, self-regulation and anxiety.
Many days it is just too hard to even leave the house, as Kobe has daily meltdowns that are extremely violent and distressing for everyone involved. He has no control over this and will often self-punish as a consequence.
Entering pre puberty, Kobe is having worrying mental health episodes of self-worthlessness and suicidal idealization.
He has no concept of danger and will run into traffic.
He has little understanding of appropriate social behaviours and finds community access extremely challenging.
Conventional methods have been unsuccessful, and Kobe is deteriorating.
Kobe has been selected to receive an autism assistance dog. This assistance dog will be utterly life changing for our son, and for our whole family. The dog will be trained to sense when Kobe is anxious, behaviour disruption of repetitive or destructive behaviour, tracking when he runs or wanders off. It will keep him safe when in public, and help him settle and sleep at night. This dog will be purpose trained to Kobe’s specific needs and will provide him with constant companionship, and help keep him safe and settled throughout his day
Attaining an assistance dog is not an immediate process. They cost $25 000 and take 12-18 months to train. We have been asked to donate at least $20 000 towards the cost before we can receive Kobe’s assistance dog.
Unfortunately, this is not something we can fully fund ourselves, with all the other specialists appointments and on going costs for Kobe. These assistant dogs don’t have any government support either which has made it very hard to afford. That is why we are asking for your help.
An autism assistance dog would change our lives and help Kobe navigate the world, be more independent, reduce the number of meltdowns Kobe has, which would significantly impact our lives.
We are in the hope that we will be able to go out as a family again, and I believe an assistance dog would enable us to do this without the constant worry of meltdowns or Kobe wondering off.
It would help Kobe reach a higher level of independence as he is getting older, and give us piece of mind that he is safe. Not only in the community, but from himself.
Kobe needs all the assistance and help to live a more comfortable, independent and safe life.
