On Saturday, May 8 Angela woke up panicked, unable to speak or use any expressive language. She was taken by ambulance to the Upstate Emergency Room as the medic feared she was having a stroke or seizure. A scan of her brain showed that she had a rare bleed in difficult location of the brain. After seeing the scans, the Neuro surgeon immediately took Angela into surgery, closed the bleed and inserted coils into the surrounding areas to strengthen and rebuild the cells. Her Neurosurgeon informed us that if Angela had waited one more hour, the outcome would have looked very different. Doctors have determined that a bacteria entered her bloodstream and caused the infection to Angela's brain resulting in the ruptured aneurysm. *Update 5/12- Doctors confirmed Angela had a stroke on 5/8.
Further testing showed that the bacteria is also in Angela's heart and she has been diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis.
Angela had a Transesophageal Echocardiogram today, May 12 to take a closer look at the damage that has been done to her heart and valves. Doctors are trying everything to avoid open heart surgery at this time since her body is still in critical state recovering from the brain procedure. We are praying for positive news from this test tomorrow.
*Update 5/12- Todays test confirmed that Angela will have to have open heart surgery.
Angela has been in The Upstate Neurology Intensive Care Unit since Saturday. To say she is a warrior is an understatement. Doctors are amazed with her progress and have described the past few days as nothing short of a miracle. Unfortunately, even with insurance, Angela is going to be saddled with copays, deductibles, and bills for her continued care and recovery. She will need 4-6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics administered multiple times a day. We want Angela’s focus to be on healing her body, receiving the speech and other therapies needed, and continuing to receive the medical care she needs to clear her body of bacteria and infection. Angela and her family appreciate any support you can give her. Most importantly, continue to send prayers and positive energy to our fighter.
