Hi everyone!
I’ve set myself a massive challenge for 2026. This May, I’ll be taking on the Great
Birmingham Run Half Marathon, pounding 13.1 miles of pavement to fundraise for
a life-changing expedition to Knoydart, Scotland, with the British Exploring
Society (BES).
The Challenge
The Great Birmingham Run is just the beginning. The real goal is Knoydart—one of
the last true wildernesses in the UK. Known as "Britain's Last Wilderness," it’s only
accessible by boat or a very long hike. While there, I’ll be living off-grid, conducting
environmental projects, and navigating some of the most remote terrain in the
Scottish Highlands.
Why British Exploring Society?
This isn't just a "trip", it’s a youth development programme. BES is a world-class
charity that has been using expeditions to transform young lives since 1932. They
believe that challenging experiences in the wild help young people build:
- Resilience: Learning to keep going when things get tough.
- Self-Belief: Discovering potential that the classroom or office can't unlock.
- Community: Working in "Fires" (small teams) with people from all walks of life.
Where Your Donation Goes
By sponsoring my run, you aren't just helping me get to Scotland; you are supporting
the British Exploring Society as a charity.
A large part of the fundraising goes directly toward making these expeditions
accessible. BES works hard to ensure that young people from all
backgrounds—especially those from areas of economic deprivation or facing
personal difficulties—have the chance to explore. Your contribution helps fund the
specialist equipment, expert leadership, and safety infrastructure that makes this
possible.
Even a small donation makes a difference:
- £10 could help provide essential kit like boots or waterproofs for an explorer.
- £25 could contribute to the scientific equipment we use for conservation
research.
- £50+ supports the intensive training and expert mentoring that keeps us safe
in the wild.
Why am I doing this?
Having previously attended a British Exploring Society Adventure Week to the
Cairngorms in Scotland, I can’t wait to be part of a full-scale expedition to the
Highland peninsula. Against arduous conditions, and missing those closest to me at
home, it proved to change my life for the better, providing me with an extreme sense
of purpose, independence, and reassurance in my ability to overcome any problem
in modern day life. Having seen firsthand, the positive impact the charity has had on
members, no young person’s ability to explore the outdoors or partake in expeditions
should be dictated by finance. I am determined to remove this barrier for individuals
like me hoping to travel the world and be part of a bigger cause than ourselves.
Follow My Journey
I’ll be sharing updates on my training (and the sore legs!) as I prepare for the half
marathon in May on my Facebook, Instagram, GoFundMe, and LinkedIn! Whether you
can donate the price of a coffee or just share this page, I am incredibly grateful for
your support.
