In light of Donald Trump's election, undocumented students at the Claremont Colleges are facing a unique threat. Trump is almost 100% likely to revoke protections like the DACA program and ramp up deportations to a massive degree. The 5C College family must be prepared to support undocumented students and Pomona community members in these dark times.
To that end, we are raising money for a KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WORKSHOP hosted by IDEAS, the undocumented students' organization in the Pomona community. Know Your Rights workshops give students knowledge about what their rights are when confronted by immigration enforcement, an important tool to defend oneself against abuse by authority. Both undocumented students and allies can benefit, as both can communicate that information to their communities at home. We will also be hosting pro bono consultations from lawyers for undocumented Pomona residents. But we need funding to pay for food and for honorariums for the many organizations involved!
This is a concrete way for those outside the Colleges to directly support and protect vulnerable communities on campus. These are trying times, and this is where the strength of the alumni network, the student body, and the Colleges as a whole will be tested. We must show that the Colleges are committed not just to intellectual inquiry, but to justice and human rights as well.
IDEAS is holding the workshop in late February. Anything helps - please contribute anything you can! Thank you.
