On the 30th December I had a dream that I started a Charity to help Victims of Knife Crime with Life Changing Injuries. I made a decision to follow it through and try my very best to make it a reality!
Since writing a Spoken Word Piece about this ever increasing issue and how it’s affecting our Communities, so many people have reached out to me to let me know how it touched their Hearts. Each person had their own story and most could relate because it had affected friends and or members of their family.
We often read statistics of tragic fatalities in our Papers and hear about it on the News. It truly saddens me as I’m sure it does you. I do feel however that Knife Crime has its forgotten Victims! There are those with terrible scarring, victims that are unable to Toilet because they were stabbed in their Bowel. Victims with Spinal injuries that can no longer walk or are having difficulty with mobility and there are people that have lost movement in limbs because of nerve or tendon damage!
All terrible, life changing injuries that must affect their self esteem, crush their dreams and make it difficult or impossible to get a Job or continue education. I can’t help but think that these Victims are often overlooked or don’t necessarily get the support they need. The Media often reports “Non life threatening injuries” and move on to the next bulletin, but for the Victims... life as they knew it DID end and they’re left wishing that they could move on just as easily.
We want to help Families that have had to cut their hours at Work in order to help out at home.. We will Support Relations that need help with Travel expenses and assist with Care, Rehabilitation and Therapy Fees. We will look to reach out to Victims and their support network and also invite them to reach out to us.
We will also raise awareness and look to educate anyone thinking of using/carrying a knife. We need to show them the long term affects using such a dangerous weapon can have. Atleast make them think TWICE! Its time for all of us to try and make a difference instead of having an opinion and writing statuses online, but not actually doing anything.
We are currently creating a Facebook group to build an online community and a place where we can update you regularly. Your donations are received with gratitude and we will show you how the Funds are put to use with those affected.
