Oliver is the sweetest boy, full of energy, love, and a heart bigger than his paws. He’s the kind of dog who loves hard and plays even harder, bringing endless joy to everyone who meets him. He has so much life and love left to give, and we want nothing more than to see him back on his feet, running and playing again.

A few weeks ago, Oliver’s world, and his parents Paula and Marcus’s, changed unexpectedly. He was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a painful and serious condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in his spine begin to deteriorate. This leads to nerve damage, pain, and in severe cases, paralysis.

Oliver is now mostly unable to use his back legs, though he still shows signs of feeling in them. This means he has paraparesis, a partial paralysis that could progress to complete paralysis without treatment. It’s been heartbreaking to watch him struggle to walk and even lose control of his bladder after once being such a happy, lively boy.

When Oliver first showed symptoms back in September, it was thought to be simple back or stomach pain, but as his condition worsened, his vet referred him to a neurologist. After further testing, the neurologist confirmed he urgently needs both an MRI and spinal surgery. The MRI will determine the exact location and severity of the disc damage, and the surgery will involve creating a small window in the vertebrae to remove the disc material that’s compressing his spinal cord.

The surgery and follow-up care are very costly, and Paula and Marcus have already stretched themselves emotionally and financially trying to help their beloved boy. The recovery process will be long and will include physical therapy to help him regain his strength and ability to walk again.
