Kloke & Karter's Medical Fund

The Incident:
On June 1st, 2015, our two dogs Kloke and Karter were attacked by a stray pitbull.  Meisha was walking Kloke and Karter less than a block away from our house like she does most days. When Meisha bent down to fix Kloke's collar, this unattended pitbull came charging from across the street directly for Kloke, ready for a fight.
After a short scuffle, Meisha was able to separate Kloke and the other dog and that's when it went straight for Karter like he was the prize at the end of the fight, just a rag doll.

Somehow Meisha was able to tie the stray dog up to a fence and when I arrived, Karter's belly near his back leg was ripped open. You could see his intestines like it was a scene from The Walking Dead.

We rushed our dogs to VCA Bay Area Animal Hospital in Oakland and the vets there were able to stop Karter's bleeding and gave him pain medications before sending us to the emergency Pets Rescue in Berkeley where he would need expert care and surgery.

The Medical Care:
Karter, our 6 year old, 19 lb. Dachshund-Pomeranian was in critical condition for several hours. The vets were able to stabilize him and he stayed overnight to receive the surgery he needed. At 7am, we received the phone call that the surgery went well and that Karter is "the luckiest dog in the whole town." There were no fractures, punctures or breaks. He is still going to need another night of care and observation at the ER but should recover fine. No idea how many staples Karter will need until we get to take him home tomorrow.

Kloke, our 7 year old, 40 lb. American Staffordshire Terrior suffered several cuts to her muzzle and has 5 staples closing her wound on her stomach.  Not to mention this lovely cone she gets to wear for the next 14 days.

How You Can Help:
As you can imagine, the medical expenses for ER, surgery and medication for our dogs was very high. Kloke's medical costs for flushing out the wound, closing it up and medication for pain cost us $600.

For Karter to get the attention he needed, I was forced to max out multiple credit cards and clean out savings to cover the low end of his medical expenses at $2,964. This does not include the additional overnight charge for him to stay while his wound drains nor the $85 for the first visit to VCA.

We are asking for any amount to help us cover the costs of the medical expenses and hopefully avoid an overdraft due to interest. Even if you can't spend $5, please share our campaign on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and anywhere/everywhere else.

What happened to the stray?
Probably one of the most frustrating aspects of this entire incident is what will happen to the dog who attacked. As pitbull owners, we are HUGE believers in it's not the dog's fault but the people who trained that dog. It was clearly bred to be a fighting dog. She had huge nipples which means she probably just had a litter, her ears looked freshly docked and she was friendly to people. She saw Kloke, another pitbull from at least a mile away and came ready to do what it was trained to do. Some of our neighbors said they had seen a lady who had 3 other pitbulls with her and just abandoned the one who attacked our dogs on International Blvd in Oakland. Since the dog was abandoned with no microchip, we have no one to press charges against or cover the medical costs for what happened to our dogs.

Multiple neighbors and friends called the Oakland PD who said they would not respond to a dog attack and they would get to it whenever. Animal control closes stupid early and no one came to get the dog. The stray dog was tied to the fence since 6:30pm. When we got home from the ER the dog was still tied up to the fence at 11:30pm. Sometime before midnight we looked outside and the dog was gone. Who knows if the Oakland PD finally came and got it or if someone else grabbed her. Animal Control drove by the "scene" the next day at Noon. Late much?

About us:

Charlotte (left) and Meisha (right) are from San Diego, California and have been together for 8 years. If you know us, you know our dogs are our children. Kloke (our princess who is scared of everything) was born in Anaheim, California and was an Easter gift from Charlotte's Godmother & Dad when she was just 6 weeks old.

Karter (the prince/attention hog) was born near Spokane, Washington and was a 20th birthday gift from Charlotte to Meisha.

This entire situation has opened our eyes to a lot of the differences in living in an area like Oakland. We love living in the East Bay but we know there's a large population of pitbulls, american staffordshire terriors and mixes of them all. Every vet we went to was extremely accomodating, kind and saved Karter's life. The locals we met at the VCA Bay Area Animal Hospital told us that several other dogs have been attacked by pitbulls in the area so I hope this also serves as a warning to other dog owners. I hate knowing even this situation adds to their bad reputation but it's people who train the dogs. Feel free to reach out to us if you'd like chat, learn more about us or if you have any questions. Every donation, no matter the size goes a long way.
