Matt, our beloved son, father, brother, uncle, and friend touched many lives for the better before passing away Friday, March 4th, in Orem, Utah. Matt was born August 27th, 1976 in Provo, as the 4th of 6 children to Richard and Debbie Johnson. He graduated from Orem High School in 1994, and from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's Degree in Geography in 2002. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Scotland from 1995 to 1997.
Matt was many things, none more so than the biggest goofball in the room. It often seemed Matt's primary purpose in life was to make those around him happy, and it was something he excelled at. One thing that will be missed most about Matt was his ability to make you laugh and smile even when you didn't feel like it. Luckily, memories and pictures of his ridiculous faces will continue to provide some of that same joy and laughter he provided when he was here himself.
Matt's desire to uplift those around him stemmed from his big heart, the only thing as big as his smile. It came as a surprise to nobody who knew him that the doctors who cared for him in his final weeks kept commenting on how strong his heart was. His big heart was on display from his playground days spent befriending the friendless until the very end.
From a young age Matt was an accomplished athlete, but seemingly found more joy in backyard games of snow football or wiffle ball than any official accolade. He gladly played the role of all-time QB for his younger brothers' games, and just months ago happily assumed the same role with the neighborhood kids. He was also happy to spend hours pitching wiffle balls to anyone who requested, whether it be younger brother, daughter, nephew, niece or neighbor. He was never too busy to join the game and always made it much more fun with his presence.
Matt was also blessed to be the father of three beautiful girls, Annika, Sofia and Rhya, whom he adored more than anything. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time playing, travelling, and just being silly with them. They were the light of his life.
Matt was adored by all who knew him and still is. It is with heavy but hopeful hearts that we look forward to a joyful reunion with him, like the one he has already experienced with his beloved mother.
