On Saturday, November 3, I discovered a homeless man and his dog preparing for a cold night in one of our parks. After spending some time with him, he informed me that he is legally blind and his dog is a service dog. He lost his apartment in May and has been homeless ever since.
Sleeping outside in the late spring and summer is totally different than in the late fall and winter in Indiana. Regardless, no one should have to sleep in a park. I thought that surely Huntington would have a shelter for someone in his position. After several hours of research and an outpouring of love & helpful suggestions from concerned individuals, we believe that we might have a place for him to live.
The gentleman and I dropped off an application yesterday at where we hope will be his future home. In the meantime, we have him temporarily staying at a hotel in town for a very reasonable rate.
But we could really use your help. First and foremost, we need prayer that the home will approve his application. Second, we could use financial donations.
I was told that the application process takes at least two weeks, and many times longer. In addition to lodging expenses, it would be great to continue to provide the gentleman and his dog with food. He also will need some basic items for his room, and there are a couple of outstanding bills that he needs to catch up.
I hope and pray that we can find this gentleman and his dog a place to live ASAP. I think it's a wise decision to plan for worst case scenario so that we can at least help him through the winter. Any surplus will be donated to area shelters to help out other individuals like this gentleman.
Thank you for your prayers and financial gifts to help this homeless gentleman through a difficult time. God Bless!
