Copper did not have an easy start to life. Years ago, finding yourself in the NYC shelter, and being a pit bull was basically a death sentence. Rescues would scramble to find placement for dogs, literally up to the minute they could be put down for any number of reasons.
Copper (originally Blu) was one of the LUCKIER ones. Saved from a shelter death, he was in boarding for years after his original adoption didn’t work out and he was under our care again. Not a problem – he was stunningly handsome, loveable and was an all-time favorite at the boarding kennel and his boarding foster mom loved him so, so much. It took A LOT of time and networking to find him the perfect home. Copper didn’t like other dogs but he LOVED cats and KIDS! Copper found his magical home – he had a kitty sibling and kids of his very own which he promptly took over their care. Watching them, keeping them warm at night and is their new best friend. We were all so happy for him, and for his new family.
Years have passed and Copper is now around 8 years old, we have always kept Copper in our hearts and in contact like we do with all our adopters. But our hearts are all shattered as we learned he has a soft tissue sarcoma, a cancerous growth. 2 biopsies later to figure out what exactly is going on, and where, our beloved boy needs a very risky and expensive (7k-10k) surgery to remove the growth, which is wrapped and twisted upon itself near his jugular vein. With the surgery, his survival rate is pretty darn good – could be years! Without, it could be a few weeks before he can lose the ability to swallow and succumb to this monster. This procedure is very complicated and requires an extremely skilled surgeon, which is why it has such a high estimate. But, we cannot let him suffer, knowing that he can live well post surgery/chemo. So once again, his life is literally in jeopardy and he needs our help. He doesn’t deserve this. His amazing family and mom describe him as “the perfect example of total unconditional love on this earth”. Copper still has a lot of important work to do, he has been their daughter’ emotional support animal, helping her with anxiety and helping get her life back to normal. He doesn’t leave her side and she is definitely his “main person”
Every dollar counts to help cover his medical bill. Times are hard, we sadly know. We need him to be healthy and live for years to come, and he needs us to be there for him. Please donate whatever you can to help us help him return to be his stoic, snuggly self.
