Born in a Japanese American incarceration camp, Kiyoshi Kuromiya dedicated his life to fighting for freedom.
Please support KIYOSHI, a feature-length documentary that presents the remarkable life and work of Kiyoshi Kuromiya – Japanese American author, civil rights, anti-war, gay liberation and HIV/AIDS activist. Kiyoshi’s story begins in a WWII incarceration camp in Heart Mountain, Wyoming, and intersects with many watershed moments in American History.
We are in the final throes of a three-year film production journey and are very excited about sharing Kiyoshi’s much needed story with the world. There are several steps to get us to the finish line, however. The most pressing is raising funds to pay for the archival footage and photo rights in the film -- pictures and moving images provide critical context to Kiyoshi Kuromiya’s life-long activism. They take us from his birthplace in the Japanese American incarceration camp in Heart Mountain, Wyoming, to his early civil rights activism in Selma, Alabama in the 1960s, to the frontlines of the HIV/AIDS battleground in the 1980s and 1990s in his beloved Philadelphia.
Kiyoshi’s life had an immeasurable impact, inspiring generations of activists. KIYOSHI captures the arc of his extraordinary life and the movements he helped build, offering a roadmap for activists working for justice today.
Help us tell his incredible story.
KIYOSHI is directed by Glenn Holsten. Producers are Keith Brand, Teresa Jaynes, Chris Bartlett, Rob Buscher and Che Gossett.
