Kiwi theatre show in Hollywood

"There’s one word to describe the 80’s in New Zealand; ‘Excess’. The cars were fast, the girls were fast, and money was faster. It was a time where money ruled the world, and everything was big; houses, boats, and egos. Henry Lewis sees property as the way to the top, and the answer to becoming a ‘somebody’. On his journey he makes decisions, sacrifices, and a lot of money. At what price does Henry find success, and can a person ever be satisfied? As the end of the decade nears, an unexpected event will burst Henry’s bubble. After all, money is the bitch you take home that never sleeps. Keep a close eye on her, for she may not be there in the morning…"

Hello!

My name is Cameron Jones.

I am an actor from New Zealand, currently living in Los Angeles.

I came here to pursue my dream and to achieve my goal of being a working actor on the 'biggest stage' in the world. After two years here, I feel like the grind of auditions have left me feeling a bit dehydrated artistically. As an actor who came from the stage, and who played with forms of mask, mime, Commedia dell'arte, Buffon and physical forms of theatre, I decided I needed to reignite the flame that made me fall in love with acting, and the arts in the first place.

I wrote, and performed a solo piece back in New Zealand in 2012, and have decided to give it, (and myself) new life by bringing it to the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2017.

I'm not entirely sure how it will be received. But I am beyond excited to be bringing it to LA! It's a New Zealand story with global themes and messages, and extremely physical. It should leave myself, and the audience, feeling short of breath by the end of its short, but sweet 25 minute running time.

The big challenge for me though, is funds. It's a pretty cheap show, but I barely have enough to support myself, let alone put up a production on a Los Angeles stage. The show will likely cost more than $1000, but I really just wanted to raise enough to cover the rent for the stage, fees for renting a space to rehearse, the stage managers wages, a couple of simple props I need, and insurance.

I need the funds by June, which is when the festival begins its month long run.

Bringing this show to Los Angeles means a lot to me personally and professionally. The subject matter is very close to my heart. It's loosely based on my father, an 80's property developer who lost everything in the stock market crash of '87, who I lost before Christmas of 2015 due to a unsuccesful heart operation. My dad never really supported my decision to be an actor, but when he saw this show back in 2012, he was moved to change his decision, and for the first time in my life I was told how proud he was of me. He won't be able to see any success that I plan to achieve out here in Hollywood, so I would like to pay tribute to him in this way, and to keep him on my journey out here.

On a professional level, I set a goal to do one theatre piece this year, and aim to achieve it. Los Angeles has not been particularly kind to me. Without a doubt the hardest two years of my life, but I'm determined to stick it through because of the love I have for telling stories and for the craft of acting. Being on stage will refuel creative tanks from the daily rejection, and help give me a bigger purpose. The story is about greed, the snowball effects of success, and ambition. In our current global climate, I couldn't think of a more appropriate story to tell. I don't think it has an agenda, but history keeps repeating itself, and we keep making the same mistakes. Will we ever learn?? So I put my questions into theatre form...

The show will be donation only (to keep my registration costs down), so I'm hoping to put that towards all the other expenses that may occur.

Please help me put this kiwi story on the world stage, and come support the arts and story telling industry by attending the Fringe Festival.

"The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation"
