Kit's Gender Marker Change

In January of 2017 I left the Clackamas courthouse elated to finally have my gender recognized by a legal entity. The court ordered my gender marker changed to an X and by June of the same year, I had that recognized on my state driver's license.

Last year I tried to change my gender marker on my birth certificate which is held by the state of Oklahoma. I was informed that there was no procedure for changing my gender marker to an X in the state of Oklahoma despite providing them with the Oregon court order.

I contacted a lawyer and we started by contacting Oklahoma Vital Records and explaining the precedent of other states recognizing X as a gender marker and the ruling of the few cases that have made it to the court. Despite many attempts, these letters were ignored and we were forced to file a lawsuit against this department through the federal courts.

I have already spent $2000 toward this goal and am about to put in another $2000 into my retainer. It is becoming a hardship to continue this fight but I can't stop now. Not only do I need to feel validated in my rightful gender, I also feel the need to clear the road so that others can get their identities recognized.
