Northeast College Tour w/ KIPPsters

KIPP Blytheville College Preparatory School is an open-enrollment, public charter school that is built on a promise. We promise each student that we will do whatever it takes to see them to and through college. To some, this may seem like a simple promise to fulfill. But 75% of our KIPPsters will be the first in their family to attend college, and the challenge that comes with being in that position cannot be overstated.

One way in which we prepare students for college matriculation and completion is by providing early exposure to a variety of college campuses. Through monthly field lessons and end-of-year trips, KIPPsters visit at least a dozen colleges by the time they reach high school. Many of these visits are close to home, though some are to cities and states across the country.

In an effort to get our students even more excited about college, we are planning to take 5 deserving and high-achieving 6th graders on a college tour throughout New England in March (2015). Our students have never traveled this far from home and have never explored the northeast. Not only would this trip give students the opportunity to step foot on an Ivy League campus and attend a real college class, but it will also provide a breadth of new life experiences.

On the week-long trip, students will visit Harvard, MIT, and St. Michael's College. KIPPsters will take tours, attend a class, meet with professors, chat with study abroad directors, and learn about the support available to under-represented minorities on these campuses.

Students will also go on a historical tour of Boston, learn how to ski or snowboard in Vermont, and select a few additional cultural experiences on their own.

With the help of KIPP Delta Public Schools, we will be covering 100% of the cost of this trip. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and our families do not have extra money to spend on experiences like this - ones that are so common for children growing up in our northeastern hometowns.

Our KIPP Through College office is providing flight vouchers for a few of the students, as well as a small mini-grant to help offset costs. To ensure that we meet our target and can plan a successful trip, we are hoping to raise $3,000 by January 16th. We will be keeping a tight budget on the trip, and any money not spent will be donated to KIPP Delta Public Schools. This donation will help support our network of schools that serve nearly 1,400 students in the Arkansas Delta.

Thank you for your consideration and for helping us fulfill our promise of college for all KIPPsters!
