Kino Pālua Burning Man 2017

Donation protected
Kino Pālua is a dual phoenix structure, which together symbolize the journey of rising above the challenges we each face in life. On one side there is fire, representing the inner pain, rage, fear and negative experiences we wish to overcome. On the opposite side is water, which represents the safe, comforting place we individually seek. We invite you to become the phoenix and embrace your challenges as you step inside Kino Pālua and interact with each sculpture.

E Komo Mai
The Hawaiian translation for Kino Pālua is dual natured. Pele’, the Hawaiian volcano Goddess’ Element is Fire. Her Sea-Goddess sister, Namka or Nā-maka-o-Kahaʻi, the eyes of Kahaʻi is Water. They represented the two seemingly eternal enemies, Fire and Water. As a result of jealous rage, Pele’ and her sister became the most bitter enemies, fighting against each other with stormy floods and violent volcanic destruction. My intention in creating this project is  a way to heal our own inner duality, showing the higher relationship between Fire and Water and directing this healing into the Universe for all.   This is a way to express your pain in a more compassionate way. Soften your heart and relationship to help bring about your healing.

Kino Pālua is the second large scale project by Bay Area artist, Kahai Sumida-Tate. Bringing Pa'hao'aho - The Volcano to the playa in 2014, the journey of transformation continues within Kino Pālua.

Two 16' x 24' temporary, wooden structures, intended to remind you to embrace the idea immediacy, Kino Pālua will welcome you to become at one and interact with the 'ahi' or 'wai' sides of the sculpture. Feel the heat and hear the roar of the 6 propane poofers as you let it all go inside ahi, and be soothed by the calming and embracing experience awaiting  you inside wai. A truly dual-natured experience.

We need your support!
We're a small crew and need your help to bring Kino Pālua to life at Burning Man this summer! By supporting our project, you will be part of a community of people who come together to help realize large scale art. Funds will cover materials, transportation, build location rental among all the other things including pyrotechnics! We will have an opening ceremony with some hula dancing, fire spinning, art cars and a beautiful fireworks show.

Some Sweet Perks...
In return, we have a bunch of great perks for you to purchase including a few super-cool 'can only get from our crew' items made especially for you, by us.

The Crew
We are a group of artists who also have full time jobs (it ain't easy livin' in the Bay Area!). Our only risk is of ourselves working too damn much this summer - but it will be worth it! We can't wait to get started on construction. We are savvy and experienced builders AND burners, the phoenix will rise.

Other Ways You Can Help
Help us spread the word and make some noise about our project.  We also are looking for in-kind donations of construction materials such as lumber, pallets, nails, lighting and of course help with the building process too. And also food! we love eating if you want to visit us on a build day!

Mahalo for continuing this journey with us!

Creation, Destruction and Transformation on your Fire journey. Intention, Devotion and Love on your Water journey.
