…is love stronger when it chooses not to be acted upon?
Hi! I’m Sara Taylor, a writer/director in my final year at the Victorian College of the Arts. I’m currently in pre-production for my graduate short film, Kindling, and I need your help to make it happen.
Set in the wintry bushland of coastal Victoria, Kindling is a tender coming-of-age short film about unspoken love and emotional restraint. When childhood friends Lil and Louis reunite by the sea, Lil quietly hopes for something more...but as secrets surface, she learns that some bonds are too sacred to risk. In the absence of romantic reciprocation, Kindling reveals the quiet beauty of a deeper, enduring friendship, and explores how some flames are not meant to be lit.
This is a story I feel uniquely placed to tell. As a young female filmmaker, I am fascinated by the quieter, unspoken currents that drift between people - the things we feel but never say. The film doesn't hinge on a dramatic confession or a definitive heartbreak. Rather, it unfolds gently across a single day, capturing the nuances of friendship, yearning, and hesitation.
...and we need your help!
We're aiming to raise money to bring Kindling to life. These funds will directly support:
- ️ Location & accommodation costs (utilities reimbursement: water, electricity, fuel, cleaners)
- Production design (to create a warm, lived-in coastal house)
- Lighting & camera equipment (vintage lenses, filtration & underwater camera housing)
- Catering & transport (to keep our small, hardworking crew going)
- Festival Distribution (application fees for national/international short film festivals)
As a student-led, independent production, we rely heavily on community support. Every single contribution, no matter how small, goes straight into making the film as honest, immersive and beautiful as it can be. Anything and everything is incredibly appreciated!

Thank you! We can't wait to bring this film to life and share the final product.
