Kim's courageous fight to walk again!

Donation protected
On an otherwise normal Thursday, Kim Oelfke was going about her morning routine working from home. Little did she know that morning her life would change forever. She had been dealing with some back pain for a few days, but nothing that seemed emergent. While walking from the office to the kitchen she began feeling the worst Charlie horse feeling she has ever felt and decided it was time to go to the Doctor as something did not seem right. She called her son Matt to come help her and shortly after her right leg became so weak, she sat down on the floor in fear that she would otherwise fall. By the time I arrived she had no control of her right leg at all. Matt and I were able to assist her into the vehicle and get her to the ER in Glencoe. During her stay there they did multiple tests and consulted with neurology. The initial MRI was negative. As the day progressed, she lost control of the left leg along with bowel and bladder control. They knew this was something serious, but the diagnosis was still unknown. She was transferred to Abbott later that night where they continued working to find an answer. On Friday it was determined that she had a stroke in her spinal cord at the T7-9 level. This is a very rare type of stroke. She spent 5 days in the ICU with a lumbar drain in place to help relieve some of the pressure on her spinal cord. This spinal cord injury has left Kim paralyzed in the legs with no guarantee that she will ever get this back. She is only 60 years old. Kim has so much life left to live and so many dreams to fulfill. We are incredibly hopeful the intense therapy she is now receiving at Courage Kenny will help her regain her ability to walk. She is going through hours of therapy each day including programs to retrain her bowel and bladder. She will be in some form of rehabilitation facility for likely the next 4-5 months to continue vigorous daily therapies. The best chance she has at regaining her movement is NOW! This will leave her out of work for that time at minimum. We would love to lessen the burden of her normal bills, medical bills, and home adjustments with the likelihood of her needing walker and wheelchair accessibility.

Kim has four granddaughters that are her everything. Their ages are 6, 4, 2 & 4 months. These girls are her world, and she wants nothing more than to be able to enjoy watching them grow for the next 20+ years!! At this time, only one visitor is allowed at Courage Kenny where she is residing. There are absolutely no children allowed and she does not know when she will get to hug them again. The visitor restrictions are hard on her heart and her mind. We continue to pray that they change restrictions and allow friends and family to visit!! We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from friends, family, and strangers during this devastating time. Though there have been plenty of tears, Kim is remaining incredibly positive and knows that feeling sorry for herself is not going to get her anywhere!! If you know Kim, you know she is an extraordinarily strong, faithful, and determined woman. If you do not know her, I am here to tell you that if anyone can pull through this it is going to be her!! She will go home. And as she has told her care team all along “I’M GOING TO WALK AGAIN!!” One of her long-term goals is to dance with her son at his August 2022 wedding and her other two sons in the future. She needs all the encouragement and cheer leaders she can possibly get!! We know that her disabilities may be permanent, but we are not giving up the fight and continue to look ahead with hope for her future! God has been with her every step of the way and we continue to find comfort in knowing he has a greater plan. Please join us in helping Kim through this difficult time and continue to pray for her healing and strength.

Due to the many people who have reached out wanting to offer support, we decided to set up this GoFundMe account. Kim has always had a kind and giving heart, always doing what she can to help others. Now we have a chance to give back to her. Please share her story in any way that you can!

Thank you for your prayers, concern, and generosity.
