There are many types of warriors in this world; warriors who combat injustice, treat & heal, serve & protect, and most notably, the warriors who fight daily after being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease or illness. There are also prayers warriors, who implore for the inflicted to maintain faith and hope, because miraculous occurrences do happen. However, despite a strong support group, expenses tend to accumulate and unforeseen setbacks can occur. It leaves loved ones feeling helpless, but that’s when pride is set aside to request assistance.
Today, family does so on behalf of Kim Pozek. This beautiful, compassionate, generous, and loving wife, sister, aunt and sister-n-law, was diagnosed with Stage 4, metastatic small cell lung cancer last year (receiving the news alone and in isolation during Covid.) She’s endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and diagnostic imaging focused on the lung tumor, bones, liver, lymph nodes, spine and adrenal glands. She worked during most of treatment (public-facing role) at the height of the pandemic, because she insisted to maintain independence and not be a burden—so much like her mother, who passed away from the same disease six years prior.
However, an MRI revealed brain metastasis three weeks ago --- chemo paused while treatment shifted to radiate multiple brain lesions. A series of side effects now require walker assistance to maintain stability, as well as further assistance from family to cook, shop and drive her to appointments and treatment. And a recent CT showed potential tumors on the spine that will require additional evaluation.
Unfortunately, Kim was denied social assistance twice, and her husband, whom is employed at a local church, works tirelessly to pay for out-of-pocket medical premiums, utilities, rent and other necessities. While family, friends and prayer group members help as best as possible, expenses continue to mount.
She would go the extra mile, and has, to help anyone in her situation, and often downplays her history of abdominal maladies. Her initial surgery at age 18 entailed gallbladder removal that left behind 30 minuscule gallstones, and stapling of a choledochal cyst to her pancreas. That resulted into gallstone extraction, cyst removal and biliary reconstruction in 2014. And in 2016, Kim required abdominal hernia surgery that necessitated an extensive reconstructive component. Shortly thereafter, she developed sepsis, due to physicians dismissing toxicity symptoms, yet recovered after an arduous healing process at a rehabilitation center. It’s never been easy for Kim, but she's always displayed such bravery and resilience.
She's surrounded by immense love and support, during this challenging journey, but additional monetary assistance will help cover specialty medications, in-home care, therapeutic equipment, treatment, hospital and physician visits, and other medical/living expenses.
We love you so much Kimmy Jean – No one stands alone in this family and your fight is our fight. A heartfelt thank you in advance to those who can contribute to her cause. It will help this warrior princess continue to fight!
