As many of you may know, our mom fell on April 22nd. She suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), fractured her skull, and had to be resuscitated. She was hospitalized for one month and then was moved to Craig Rehabilitation Hospital on May 23rd. At Craig, she is receiving excellent care - multiple therapies a day to reconnect her neural pathways and is supported by a team of experts who are continually evaluating the long-term impact of the accident.

Through this evaluation and MRIs, her brain suffered major impact to both her communication and language area, as well as her frontal lobe, which deals with inhibition and decision-making. She is anxious to get back to her life but doesn’t have the ability to understand the gravity of what has happened.

Our mom is in a tough spot financially because of a combination of unfortunate circumstances. For obvious reasons, she is unable to return to work now or in the foreseeable future. Second, her pipes froze and burst at the end of December, rendering her house inhabitable with almost a full remodel needed. We are currently working with the insurance company to finalize her claim, but it's a cumbersome and slow process. On top of it all, her health insurance company is denying 20 days of her hospital stay at St. Anthony's Hospital.

No one can provide answers about what our mom's recovery or the rest of her life looks like. We are working on long-term solutions with the resources at Craig to find programs that offer financial relief but have been told it is a long and tedious process, with the earliest help starting in December. Additionally, our mom's insurance will not cover care after Craig. With her current discharge date being the last week of July, there are at least 3 months of at-home care needed.

Regrettably, this explanation of the situation only scratches the surface of what we are dealing with. We are trying to take away as much financial stress of the situation off of our mom so she can focus on getting better. As many of you know, our mom is resilient, independent, smart, generous, and a fighter. Any contributions are incredibly appreciated and will be used to pay her bills and healthcare needs.

We thank you for your positive energy and support.
