Kimberly Morin's ALS Diagnosis & Treatment

Donation protected
This is my mom Kimberly, she is 47 and on March 22nd 2021, her life was changed forever. She was in Kingston ON, at an appointment with her neurologist when he gave her devastating news: she has ALS.

ALS is a progressive neurological disease that damages the nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle movements (walking, talking, chewing and use of hands). It does not have a cure.

In March 2020 (undiagnosed at this time) Kimberly's mobility had decreased and she had to resign from her job. As her ALS continues, her mobility and functions will become limited. My dad will have to renovate their house to make it accessible for their future: a ramp into the house, lift kits to get her out of bed, out of the shower/tub, lifted toilet seats, handle bars and so much more. These renovations are necessary for my mom to be cared for at home and to maintain her quality of life.

Typically you would register with ALS Canada and they would help you get the funding to help make these changes in the home. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 the funding has been stretched thin.

A person diagnosed with ALS today faces a tremendous financial burden: the disease has an average cost to a family of $150,000 - $250,000. Families not only have to face costs associated with treatment, care, and equipment needs, but they also lose income when patients and family caregivers stop working as a result of ALS.

To ensure my mom receives proper care at home, my dad will be retiring early. Time is precious and we want to spend as much time as we can with mom. This decision, however, is causing increased financial stress from the reduced income and the continuing expenses of managing ALS.

I am hoping to ease the financial stress on my parents so we can cherish the time we have with my mom. All proceeds will go to home renovations, home care, transportation to ALS clinics in Kingston & Toronto (2 hour away from their home) and accessibility devices. Any leftover donations and equipment will be given to ALS Canada to assist other families during their transitions.

My family and I thank you so much. Words can not fully explain how much your generosity means to us.
