The Family

Meet Kim and Al deKluyver. They have been married since 1997 and have two beautiful, young daughters, Nathania (15) and Abby (14). Kim works as an Educational Assistant at Foothills Academy and Al is a Fire Fighter with the City of Calgary.

History and Prognosis

Kim was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in the summer of 2009. At the age of 32, Kim underwent surgery and had a bilateral mastectomy followed by 6 rounds of chemotherapy. Though the road was long, she managed to recover and remained in remission for 9 years.

In December of 2017, the de Kluyver family received devastating news that the Cancer was back, only this time it was discovered in her skull, collar bone, legs, hips, pelvis, lumbar spine, thoracic spine and ribs

Kim has enjoyed an active lifestyle for many years with Al and the girls. As a family they love skiing, biking, climbing, hiking, camping, playing board games, and recently are addicted to watching “Sherlock” together. Kim’s treatment allows her to manage the day to day and to maintain some activity.  As her treatment continues it will hopefully stop the progression of the disease for a few years.  She will also be receiving infusions every three months, which will strengthen her bones, hopefully allowing her to resume some of the activities that she has had to stop at the present to prevent further injury to her spine and pelvis.   Her Cancer can not be cured, but can be “put to sleep” for a time.  The “cancer data” would give Kim only a few more years, however,  they are hoping for many more years together, and are thankful for every day that God grants them together and for all of the progress being made within “Cancerland” every day.

The funds raised will go towards a modest renovation of the main floor in their home to achieve a functional space for the de Kluyvers to enjoy together. The main floor is the hub of their home and they love to entertain family and friends. The current kitchen is an L- shape and the narrow corridor leading into the living room makes the layout impractical as it will not accommodate any sort of reduced mobility in the future.  The countertops are not salvageable due to rot and the cabinets and drawers need to be replaced as they are worn and stripped making them difficult to open.  The previous owner attempted a DIY “upgrade” but further investigation has revealed that inside the cabinets there are several junction boxes including a live hidden electrical outlet directly under the sink. This renovation will provide the de Kluyvers with the space they need as well as ensure any safety issues have been addressed.

All of the efforts of skilled trades and labour have been donated but even small jobs like this require a considerable amount of funding.  Any amount will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Let us bless them with a kitchen that can safely host a multitude of friends and family, especially when the time comes that it is hard for them to leave the house.

Thank you!
