Let me tell you about my Aunt Kim. She is one of the sweetest, strongest women that I have ever met. With only a 14 year age difference between us, growing up, she was more like my sister. She used to dress me up in her old baton costumes and curl my hair. I remember countless times sitting on the bathroom counter and her telling me to flip my head over so she could tousle my hair and make it really curly.
She is more than just my aunt. She is my best friend.
We grew up and had families of our own. She has been married to Marc for 25 years and they have two AMAZING kids together. Kierra is a sophomore at Millersville and Landon is a sophomore at South Western High School. They currently live in Hanover, Pa where Kim has worked for the Sheridan Press for over 20 years.
This selfless woman has always been there for me, her family, and her friends. Now, she needs our support.
A little over a year ago, Kim was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It attacks cells in the brain and spinal cord needed to keep muscles moving, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Eventually, the disease robs a person of the ability to speak, eat, move, and even breathe. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is two to five years. Those hands that used to curl my hair are now struggling to hold a brush.
The medical costs associated with this disease are staggering; doctor's appointments, an electric-powered wheelchair, house renovations for wheelchair accessibility, and much more. The next big purchase that they need to make is a wheelchair accessible van. This van is necessary to transport her to and from appointments and events. Even used, they range from $30,000-$60,000. With your support, I am hoping that we can relieve some of their stress associated with these costs. Please consider making a donation today.
