Brenda's First Recruit - Kim Lynch

When Brenda Frese came to Maryland, one of her first recruits was someone who never recorded a minute in the score book, but she was on the floor and critical to the success of the team. Brenda needed a hard worker, someone she could trust, someone who she could give a job to and know that it would get done the right way, who could do all the behind the scenes work without complaint or recognition. Brenda needed a student-manager- so she recruited a long-time friend’s daughter, who was transferring to Maryland. She recruited Kim Lynch.

Kim was a student-manager with Maryland Women’s Basketball from 2002-2006. Even our most dedicated fans may not be familiar with Kim. That's what managers do- all the stuff that fans rarely notice, but are so important to the team’s success. Kim did all those things, and along the way, she built lasting relationships with student-athletes, staff, and coaches. She was exactly the person that Brenda Frese needed as a part of her team.

Now Kim needs us.

On her fortieth birthday, Kim was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Blood cancer. Treatable, but not curable. Now a wife, the mom of two, and a professional, she still does a lot of work behind the scenes so that her children will have opportunities and thrive, because that’s what mom’s do. These days, those things are a lot tougher and there are a lot more unknowns. We do know this though- Kim’s family will incur many medical expenses that are not covered by her insurance, as she undergoes extensive treatment that is already underway. We also know that her ability to earn and save for future family expenses, like childcare and education will be extremely limited. Cancer has lots of implications, one of them is financial. A donation will help Kim in many ways and will also solidify to her family that she is and always will be, a member of our family too- the Maryland Women’s Basketball Family.
