Kilkenny / Laois border

Our rural landscape along the Kilkenny / Laois border is under immediate threat. An unprecedented wave of industrial-scale wind farms is being proposed across our communities, including Gathabawn, Spa Hill, Killoshulan and Cullahill.

If permitted, these turbines, standing up to 170 metres tall, would permanently change our landscape, threaten local wildlife, put our water sources at risk, and affect daily life in our homes.

Structures of this scale would dominate our skyline and are entirely out of proportion with the countryside around them.

We are not against wind energy. But this region has reached its limit, and we are saying “no more wind farms here.” Placing industrial-scale turbines among populated rural communities is inappropriate and unacceptable.

Why we need your help now

Emotion alone will not stop these developments. An Coimisiún Pleanála decides on expert evidence and planning law. The developers have well-funded consultants, and we need ours.

Every euro raised will go towards a robust, expert-led submission, including:

A professional planning consultancy to audit the developers’ applications and prepare our objections.

Specialist ecology and conservation reports assessing the impact on our protected sites, including Special Areas of Conservation at Spa Hill and Clomantagh Hill, The Loughans and Gathabawn.

Landscape and environmental assessments calling for formal protection of the visual heritage of Gathabawn, Cullahill Mountain, Spa Hill and Clomantagh, and for safeguards so that our water supplies and local ecology are not permanently harmed.

The deadline for submissions for the Gathabawn Wind Farm is 25 November, so time is short.
