Welcome to this fundraiser for the
We are raising $19,341 which is the height of Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro in feet. You can be part of this goal in multiple ways with a fundraiser culmination trail run/ obstacle course race event on October 23, 2021 at GoFAR USA Park in Priceville, Alabama https://gofarusapark.com
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on the rim at 19,341 feet. Thousands of people attempt the climb each year. For safety reasons, individuals cannot make the climb alone they must be accompanied by a professional guide and porters. These amazing people carry additional weight throughout the adventure, allowing tourist trekkers to carry only a day pack as we climb into the thin air. They are more than guides to point the way; they support and entertain, looking out for hazards and our health and wellbeing. They cook for us and set our tents up and have the unenviable job of maintaining our portable toilets.
They are all extremely hard workers whose main income relies on tourism. COVID has completely decimated tourism to the area and people are struggling immensely to make ends meet and feed their families.
Unlike in Western countries, there has been no support from the government for anyone in Tanzania during the pandemic. The porters have been diligent in finding other means of income which is scarce and only pays $1-$2 per day. Education levels are quite low within the crew and many have only completed studies up to primary level. This also means that the opportunities a porter receives outside of tourism are low or compensate very poorly.
The funds are desperately needed as porters depend directly on tourism as they only work when a local tour operator has climbing opportunities. These have been extremely limited since the start of COVID and things are not looking up in the near future.
The funds from this campaign will help the porters pay school fees for their children, finish paused construction projects on their home, pay rent and other bills including medical and hospital bills. The money will give many the opportunity to go back to school and further develop their skills, which will help them secure a variety of better paying jobs.
Generally it is not in the local culture to keep savings (long-term savings especially) and many porters don't even have bank accounts. Many have since realized the importance of this and will keep any extra amount as a 'rainy day' fund. The cost of living is not as high in Tanzania as it in the USA, which means any small funds given will directly help the porters and their families. Many porters support their extended family as well as their immediate family so a supporting the porters and guides will have a far-reaching effect.
The funds from this campaign will be distributed in the form of a “pay check” for completed work as part of this project. The porters in need will be commissioned to perform different jobs such as tree-planting, the cooks will make videos about local recipes and others can give Swahili lessons to incoming tourists through videos. The aim is to generate a dignified and impactful mode of earning which gives back to their community.
Part of the raised funds will be donated to KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project https://kiliporters.org/) to help in their quest to maintain the fair treatment of porters as well as provide learning opportunities that will enrich their quality of life in the future. KPAP also helps to improve the working conditions of porters by:
- Lending donated clothing at no charge to the mountain crew for use while climbing
- Offering educational classes to porters
- Educating the public on porter working conditions and climbing responsibly
- Providing industry guidelines for proper porter treatment
