Kilimanjaro Climb for Muscular Dystrophy – In Memory of Dino Giannetti
At the age of 5, my cousin Dino Giannetti was diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). While this degenerative muscular disease slowly took my cousins physical ability and mobility away from him over time, this disease never took away his mind, drive, or motivation to push all boundaries in life. Although restricted to a wheelchair, Muscular Dystrophy (MD) was never an excuse, not once! Dino graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Commerce (highest honours), became a Sommelier, was a food connoisseur, played hockey (O.P.W.H.L), travelled, raised thousands of dollars for MD, and became a voice for those suffering from this disability. He touched many people with his positive energy and outlook on life. I was one of those people. His first cousin, friend, and “partner in crime” – when we spent time together.
Unfortunately on December 16, 2017, just shy of his 30th birthday, Dino passed away. One of his life long dreams was to visit Africa – but due to his gradual deteriorating condition, the risk of such a trip was too high. Although no longer with us, this September, to honour his memory and life, I will be visiting Africa and will attempt to climb over 19,000 ft to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the "roof of Africa".
As I prepare for this journey, I will be raising money for Muscular Dystrophy research in Dino’s name. Although no longer with us physically, Dino’s legacy will live on – and one of his lifelong dreams will come true as I hope to place a picture of Dino at the top of the world’s highest free-standing mountain.
100% of all money raised will be going to Muscular Dystrophy research in Dino’s name, to help find a cure. Thanks to all for any donation you can provide to this great cause!
