Kilimanjaro climb for City Mission

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.  It also happens to be a volcano with the potential to erupt, though the most recent volcanic activity was about 200 years ago and the most recent eruption was in prehistoric times.  Dave and Brenda Tenison of McMurray are training to climb to the summit, an eight-day trek that nearly half of those who begin are unable to finish, according to ultimatekilimanjaro.com.

“I was inspired to do the climb, because it is a physical and mental challenge,” said Dave Tenison, General Manager for the Perryman Company in Houston, PA and the Chairman of the Board of Directors for City Mission.  “Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro will give Brenda and I the feeling of being alive and pushing the envelope.”

“This adventure was originally my husband’s,” added Brenda Tenison.  “However, it quickly became my own, and I want to accomplish summitting Mt. Kilimanjaro as well.”

The Tenisons have also decided to use their adventure as an opportunity to raise funds for City Mission.  “I was inspired by County Commissioner Diana Irey Vaughn to turn this climb into a fundraiser,” Dave said.  “She raised over $100,000 running races such as the Walt Disney World Marathon.”

“We firmly and wholeheartedly believe in what City Mission does every day to help restore people to independent living,” he added.  “This is just another way to bring attention to the tremendous work this organization does.”

The Tenisons have been planning this trip for about a year and have been training for the past four months.

“We trained by doing hikes every weekend and walking the hills in our neighborhood with weighted vests on,” Brenda explained.  “Part of the fun of the training was finding all sorts of great hiking trails in Pittsburgh.  We even hiked around Mt. Washington and had great views of the city.”

The hike to the peak will take the Tenisons through tropical landscapes, forests, rainforests, deserts, and the icy glacier at the summit.  They are following the Lemosho route, a slower ascent and more scenic trail, which will give them time to acclimate to the severe change in altitude.  Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the mountain, stands at 19,341 feet above sea level, and altitude sickness is one of the primary reasons people fail to reach the summit.

If you would like to follow their climb and help support the life-changing work of City Mission along the way, the Tenisons will be creating a gofundme page where you can become a part of the adventure.
