Mayo Clinic News Story about Kieran.
In November 2014, Brian and Caitlin went in for the standard 20 week anatomy scan to determine whether baby Veitz was a boy or girl. Family was split about 50-50 on the newest member set to arrive the first week of April 2015. Mom and dad didn't know how to keep it a secret until the gender reveal party scheduled for that weekend they were expecting a baby girl!
The follow-up with Caitlin's OB wasn't for an hour after, so they went shopping for itty bitty baby girl clothes. Unfortunately, the excitement didn't last long. The doctor and his student sat down to explain the results. He stated there were abnormalities with her chest wall and, cut to the chase, points to her tiny heart sitting outside her ribcage.
He would go on to explain the condition known as Ectopia Cordis, a congenital heart defect which boasts only a 10 percent survival rate and occurs approximately 5.5 to 8 births per one million, and scheduled us for appointments with Maternal Fetal Medicine in Fargo. They would go on to refer us to several leading hospitals for Pediatric Cardiology. We opted for Dr. Joseph Dearani at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Kieran's complete diagnosis is Pentalogy of Cantrell. A quick Google search will reveal there aren't many folks alive with this condition . Kieran has defied the odds, and as she continues to do so, hospital bills, travel expenses, and other miscellaneous expenses will continue as well.
