Kids with Disabilities Need Science

We are full inclusion students at Montera Middle School in Oakland Unified School District. We all have different types of disabilities but we don't let that hold us back!
Many of us are struggling with typical middle school difficulties such as dealing with puberty, wanting to fit in, being low income, having single parent homes, and learning English as a second language. Some of us are struggling with much more difficult situations. We have auto-immune diseases, intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairment, vision impairment and some of us are gunshot wound victims.
We are happy to be in a school district that offers full inclusion. We want the same education and opportunities as our typically developing peers. Our teachers do their best to support us and give us those opportunities but sometimes we still get left out. We have 5 wheelchairs in our class and it makes it very difficult for us to participate in school field trips.
We would like to raise money to go on a field trip to the California Academy of Sciences. This is a great educational opportunity for us. Based in Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Sciences is a destination like no other and a must-see San Francisco museum. It’s the only place on Earth to house an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum—all under one living roof.
From the splashing penguins in African Hall to the wildflowers on the roof, the building is bursting with life. A four-story living rainforest and awe-inspiring coral reef ecosystem showcase Earth’s biodiversity, while immersive planetarium shows offer a new perspective on the planet we call home.
Please help us meet our goal of going to the California Academy of Sciences! We cannot afford to pay for the accessible buses and our school does not have funding for it.
We need to raise:
$1,700 for accessible buses
$500 for admission
$300 for expenses related to care and transport of students with disabilities
Our trip is scheduled for May 7th. We hope to raise all the funds we need by May 1st.
We will be incredibly thankful to anyone who donates to our trip! Not only will we get to learn all about coral reefs, but this will be a fun experience for us that lets us forget about our struggles for a short time and lets us feel normal!
