Hello and thanks for checking out this GoFundMe! I’m Sara (known to my students as Mx. Engel - pronounced “mix”). I’m a Cambridge public school art teacher, as well as a parent. I have worked with children of all ages for decades, integrating art and creativity whenever possible. I currently have a wonderful job in an excellent school system, but this school year is unlike any other. I will be teaching art remotely and worry most about the inequity faced by many students in my school and in the district. Having basic supplies to create with is a necessity, and these are not accessible for many families that live in this city.
The need for social and emotional outlets is imperative for students during this time. Art, music, library and physical education are the subjects most overlooked by school administrators despite the fact that children love them! This neglect seems to be exacerbated by the pandemic, as schools are focused on the logistics of how to create a remote learning experience. To counteract that, my goal is to make simple free art kits for students throughout my city, delivering the packs safely to neighborhoods in need, community centers and to coordinate pick up stations at local schools - giving students the opportunity to create at home.
My initial goal is to create 150 kits, which cost approximately $4 each to make. The kits will be divided into two choices and contain items appropriate for grades K-3 and grades 4 & 5.
K-3 simple art kit:
• 1 pack thick color markers
• 1 pack (24ct) crayons
• 1 pencil with one extra eraser top
• 2 glue sticks
• 1 foam paintbrush
• 1 pencil sharpener
4 & 5 art kit:
• 1 pack thin color markers
• 1 pack colored pencils
• 1 bottle liquid school glue
• 1 small flat paint brush
• 1 wooden ruler
• 2 pencils
• 1 eraser
• 1 pencil sharpener
I’ve made 30 of these kits with my own money, and now I’m asking for a little help to offset the costs. A contribution of just $8 helps to provide 2 kits! I have set a modest goal of 150 kits, but if I receive more I will make more. Imagine the benefits if I could reach 1000!
