On July 6, 2016, my husband Martin Cupid was blessed with a kidney transplant. After 5 years of dialysis and 5 years of waiting for the special call stating that there is a kidney match available for him, we could not be happier. Martin was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) which is a rare disease that attacks the kidney’s filtering units (glomeruli) causing serious scarring which leads to permanent kidney damage and even failure. FSGS is one of the causes of a serious condition known as Nephrotic Syndrome. By 2011 Martin's kidneys completely failed causing him to begin his treatments of Peritoneal Dialysis. It's been a struggle but by the grace of God we continue on this great journey of life. Post transplant, Martin and I will have to remain in Tampa, Florida to remain close to Tampa General Hospital where Martin received his kidney transplant. Leaving our family back at home for over a month is hard, especially the 2 year old baby girl. We both will be taking FMLA for 1-3 months depending on Martin's recovery process. While insurance will pay for most of Martin's medications that he will need to take for the rest of his life there is a significant amount that we will have to pay out of pocket. Money raised will help Martin's monthly medication bills. Having a sense of peace not having to worry about survival will take the burden off of us and allow Martin to recover sooner and then we both can get back to work.
