Kidney Transplant Support for Ma-Nee Chacaby
Donation protected
Beloved Two Spirit Elder Ma-Nee Chacaby is on the list for a kidney transplant.
Ma-Nee is a mentor, support, and advocate to Two Spirit communities across the country. You may have met her at a rally in Thunder Bay or Toronto, on the dance floor at Glad Day, or had the honor of sitting with her in circle. She is dedicated to mentoring young people, sharing Anishinaabe teachings and stories, and supporting access to ceremony for 2SLGBTQ+ Indigenous peoples. Ma-Nee has a fearless and generous spirit and we are eternally grateful to her activism.
Among her many community contributions, Ma-Nee has worked in HIV education; is an avid Oji-Cree language teacher, a visual artist and storyteller; rallied for the first Youth Suicide Awareness walk in Thunder Bay (2019); supports community patrol with debwewin bimosewin; sits on many boards, including for the City of Thunder Bay; and is even a bit of a film star (Fire Song shoutout!). Her book "A Two Spirit Journey" is an important account of her life and has connected people across Turtle Island and the world to her story.
*We know Ma-Nee's work has touched and supported many people, and now is an opportunity to support her.*
This fundraiser will support Ma-Nee to travel from Thunder Bay to Toronto for 3-4 months for her surgery and recovery. Funds will be used for transportation, accommodations, and food while in Toronto, and cover some of her loss of income for up to 6 months while she recovers.
We don't know when the surgery will happen, but once a donor is identified things will likely proceed quickly, so it's important for funds to be ready.
Interested in helping in other ways?
Ma-Nee will need a 2 bedroom or large 1 bedroom apartment close to Toronto General Hospital. If you are willing to lend or rent something that will be suitable, be in touch! This is the most significant cost to her recovery and we are counting on community support - through fundraising, or an in-kind or reduced rate rental.
MA-NEE STILL DOES NOT HAVE A CONFIRMED DONOR. If you are interested or even curious about what it would mean to donate a kidney and give this precious gift to Ma-Nee to continue to thrive, contact the Renal Services at Thunder Bay Regional Health Services or the fundraiser organizers. We are a small team of helpers who are happy and willing to support you in figuring out next steps should this be of interest to you!
If you’re in Tkaronto and are interested in being part of Ma-Nee’s recovery care team, let us know!
