Kick Kelly's Cancer

Donation protected

In April 2018, one of our fellow nursing students here at MCCC, Kelly Audette, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. For those of you who don't know Kelly, she is a dedicated mother of three currently moving on to the third semester in the professional phase of the Nursing Program at Mercer County Community College. Before her diagnosis, she was working two jobs as a Captain/EMT at Trenton EMS and Cooper University EMS. She is kind, hard-working, and amazingly determined. Those of us who know her personally could tell you stories of her bravery, tenacity, and humor, spit-fire personality, and above all her commitment to care.

Kelly is scheduled for a lymph node biopsy and double mastectomy later this month. Her Doctors have not yet determined what further treatments will be needed until after her biopsy, but feel chemotherapy  is a possibility.

As future and current health care professionals, we understand the physical, mental, emotional, and financial difficulties that lie ahead. In order to assist our sister in nursing, a collection is being organized with the help of her fellow students and professors at MCCC.  We are raising money to help with medical and household expenses, meal service, and comfort supplies to aid in her healing and decrease her stress during her surgical recovery and possible chemo and radiation treatments.

Donations to the #KickKellysCancer fund can be made here, where Kelly can have direct access. The goal seems low, but together we can raise the bar! Item donations can be dropped off in the Nursing Office at Mercer County Community College. Suggested donations could include: Blankets, Socks, Books, Adult Coloring Books and Colored pencils, Mints, Gift Cards to iTunes/Amazon/Restaurants, Chapstick, Sunblock, Eucerin/Aquaphor body lotion, Drinking Bottles, Protein Bars/Shakes, Anti-Nausea pressure bands, and of course emotional support/encouragement cards. Of course, this list of suggestions includes items possibly needed during the course of chemotherapy or radiation treatments that we hope she won't be needing, but it is always good to be prepared. Any additional items are definitely welcome.

Kelly needs our help now! Together as friends, co-workers, family, mentors, and fellow students, let's help Kelly Kick Cancer's Ass!!

Message from Kelly to her FB family:

So several of you already know I’ve been going through a rough couple of weeks, a few have suspected and many have asked questions. At this point I feel this is the easiest and least stressful way of getting my situation out there because frankly telling the story over and over again is mentally draining. Plus it’s getting around through the grapevine I’ll be out of work for about 2-3 months and of course everyone wants to know why.

So 2 weeks ago tomorrow I was officially diagnosed with breast cancer. Although, I’ve known in my gut since about April 11th when I found it myself, I had to wait for mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsy to confirm. And ladies let me tell you, ALWAYS trust your gut and if you feel something is wrong PUSH for the tests you deserve!! They only wanted to do a mammo which came back normal and it wasn’t until the tech herself pushed my doc for the ultrasound that they found it and knew right away it was cancer but had to wait on biopsy for confirm 100%. Between this and my semester finishing up it’s been a rough couple of weeks, more-so mentally waiting for results to decide which surgical option was right for me.

I have had all the tests I’ve needed done, yes I’ve gotten multiple opinions, yes I’ve told my kids, Eric and family. ***All I ask is that you PLEASE respect THEIR privacy at this time because it’s equally as stressful, if not more for them than it is for me.*** I’m in amazing spirits, ready to fight this and win. PLEASE DO NOT approach them with questions. I’m an open book and you can feel free to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or dietary/holistic approaches you might want to suggest. I will be having surgery the 21st and 29th of May, chemo and radiation are still up in the air at this point pending final pathology reports after surgery. I have an amazing team of doctors and nurses and I plan on following my surgeons and oncologists advice but I will also be trying to eat better, take better supplements and holistically fight this too (after running it by my team of docs of course!)

And to those of you who’ve known and who have been there for me these last few weeks of absolute hell between school and the emotional whirlwind of almost daily appointments I want to THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!!! ❤️ ❤️
