Kat needs our help!
As many of you know, Kathy Binder (Kat) was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in December 2015. Multiple Myeloma is a rare blood cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell which originates in the bone marrow, and which also produce the antibodies needed to fight infection. Kat fiercely and quietly fought this rare form of cancer with the help of family and close friends over the next several years. I am lucky to be one of those friends (though she is always family in my book!) and offered to help during one of her hospital stays. As she lay there fighting for her life, it was impossible to ignore how the cancer had ravaged her entire existence. I'd never seen anyone so frail, but in true Kat spirit, she always had a smile, that laugh that makes your whole heart fill up, and said not to worry - we'd be out on the boat having a glass of wine together soon!
After multiple hospital stays, chemo treatment, an intense daily meds regiment, tons of prayers, and mostly her fighting spirit, Kat was in remission! Despite this great news, the cancer had left many permanent reminders of just what she'd been through, including reduced kidney function, frequent infections, nausea, extreme fatigue and weakness - leaving her unable to work. Kat's youngest son, Alex, was forced to quit school and move back home to care for his mom day in and day out, also limiting his ability to work.
Unfortunately, Kat recently received the heartbreaking news that her cancer was back. Because of the rarity of Multiple Myeloma and ongoing care she will need to begin treatment again, Kat and Alex moved to Texas. The benefits are invaluable; they are living with her youngest sister Alyce (yay, family!) who can help with Kat's care, and Texas has AMAZING cancer treatment centers. This is exactly where she needs to be! However, the first 5 years of battling Multiple Myeloma have exhausted Kat and Alex's resources, including financial income and savings.
If you know Kat, she isn't one to ask for help, she's one to offer it. She is one of my very best friends in this whole world, and after a little bit of arm-twisting and what I can only imagine to be a feeling of sheer desperation, she agreed to this Go Fund Me.
