DPS Grads in Medicine: India Trip

Donation protected
Hi! We are first generation graduates currently attending Wayne State University School of Medicine. Our names are Kiara Whitsell and Latoya Jeanpierre. We are both proud graduates of the Detroit Public School System, Martin Luther King High School, and Renaissance High School respectively. We both consider it an honor to represent DPS and the potential of its students in both medical school and the world more generally. Growing up in Detroit and witnessing the health disparities encourages us to serve underserved communities.

This summer we would like the opportunity to participate in a medical mission trip to Vellore, India with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI). While abroad we will help The Christian Medical College of Vellore provide healthcare to underserved communities in Vellore, India.

The total cost of the trip is 2,500 per person, which includes room and board, airfare, and food. We are departing in May and will spend 4 weeks in Vellore, India.

We would like your financial support to take advantage of this rewarding experience because we do not have the financial means to do so.

How will this mission trip to India benefit us?

• We will receive early exposure to medical procedures by shadowing and assisting physicians in various medical specialties.

• We will gain experience in providing healthcare with limited resources.

• We will have the privilege to learn about Indian history and culture. Interacting with the Indian culture will teach us how to overcome cultural barriers in a clinical setting, a critical skill in today's healthcare environment.

• This trip will allow us to bring the clinical and cultural knowledge that we will gain back to Detroit.

We are committed to being a resource to our community, and consider this trip a continuation of the outreach in which we currently participate.

• We help combat hunger by volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank and The Community Homeless Interprofessional Program. (CHIP)

• We assist in decreasing preterm birth in the Detroit are by recruiting women into the Make Your Date Program at Receiving Hospital.

• We assist in providing healthcare to the homeless and less fortunate by volunteering with Street Medicine, Cass Clinic, All Saints Clinic, and local healthcare fairs.

We will greatly appreciate any financial support you are able to give. Please inform anyone that you know that may be interested in supporting us. Thanks everyone!
