Hi!
My name is Kiana Unger, I am 19 years old and currently reside in Vancouver, British Columbia. For those of you that know me, you know that dance has always been the foundation of my life. Being a dancer has made and inspired me to be who I am today and want to become tomorrow. I would not have the friends, support system, opportunites and life lessons if it weren't for being a dancer. I feel so grateful to have found my passion in life and to be able to do it do everyday!
Last year I trained with the Source Dance Company, a pre-professional company in Vancouver, learning from some of the top ranked choroegraphers and teachers in the industry in all styles of dance, performing at a variety of shows in the area and in our own final show this past July.
This year I am focused on transitioning into the professional contemporary ballet world of dance. So far, this year has included, training on my own by attending classes at Harbour Dance Centre, conventions, workshops, auditions, private ballet lessons, self training in the studio, teaching, subbing and attending live shows.
I also have been fortunate enough to learn the business aspect of this career this year by attending career seminars specifically for emerging dancers, assist with administrative work for GSP dance conventions and working as a writer and Sales associate at Dance Power competitions.
I auditioned for a summer program in February called Axis Connect and to my surprise, recieved an accpetance letter to their program! Axis Connect is 2 weeks in the summer, one week in New York City and the other in Los Angeles. We get to learn from high in demand teachers and choreographers in each city, make connections with industry leaders and peers and sit in on insightful lectures throughout each week.
I couldn't pass up this opportunity of a lifetime that I know will help get me to the next step in the journey to my ultimate goal (being in a contemporary ballet company).
I am humbled to say I am self supporting myself here in Vancouver but have realized I cannot support myself for both my living expenses here in Vancouver and Summer fees at the same time, as well as the exchange rate! As the payment dates are once every month leading up to July, I would really appreciate your assistance!
It wasn't easy realizing that I need to ask for help because I wish I could do this on my own but I firmly believe that "Sometimes you have to take destiny into your own hands." - Mindy Kaling
If you would like to donate to my summer dance training, your funds will go to my tuition, housing and living expenses! Any kind of help, whether it's sharing this link to my story or just a couple dollars would mean the world to me! I would be so grateful for anyone who is willing to help me get one step closer to my goal to fund my summer dance training!
Thank you with all my heart!
- Kiana
