Al has gone through a troubling period of experiencing kidney failure, among other complications that came with it. He was put on dialysis to keep his organs functioning, and has been unable to work in more than five years. His wife, Brandee, has taken the workload since then, providing money to pay the bills while also assisting Al with his condition.
On November 12, 2014, life took a drastic turn for Al and Brandee.
Al went to the hospital with what he thought was only an upper respiratory infection. Instead, he found that he was experiencing angina and an upper respiratory infection. He was told he’d need to have an unexpected triple bypass once the infection went away. He spent two months in the hospital, during which he had a lung collapse twice, followed by a virus that spread around his PD (Peritoneal Dialysis) catheter, causing even further problems. Another surgery had to be performed in order to remove the PD catheter and temporarily put in a hemodialysis catheter while the infected area heals up. He is expected to have the hemodialysis catheter for at least six weeks. He is on a long road to recovery and has recently transitioned from a wheelchair to a walker, gaining back the strength in his legs. He’s getting there, one step at a time – literally and figuratively!
During this troubling time, Brandee had to take an unpaid leave of absence from work, thereby putting them in another difficult situation. Without money coming in, the couple is struggling to pay for their bills and other living expenses. Toiletries and other household necessities are running low almost as quickly as the couple’s money. Medical bills are eating up what funds they do have, and their electricity and water are on the brink of being shut off. Brandee is unable to return to work due to having to care for Al in his present state and the emotional damage it has caused her.
