Khloee’s perspective:

”I woke up just like a normal day. I had breakfast and had taken my meds. I left my apartment with Papa to get some stuff from Morrison. As we were on the way I suddenly felt off with my head and eyes. I said “oh shit” and I remember Papa saying “what?!” Asking to make sure I was okay. Papa said I then said “you’ll see” but I don’t remember that because I was already out of it at that point.”

Grammy’s Perspective/Filling in the blanks:

Khloee has actually worked earlier that day but she doesn’t remember that.

After Khloee saying “you’ll see” she started seizing. They were already headed to Morrison so Papa (Shannon) sped to the ER while holding Khloee’s head to maintain her airway. They got to the ER and the staff helped her inside while she was still seizing. They gave her rescue meds and finally stop this seizure. Unfortunately, Khloee had another seizure and continued with a postictal state that she wasn’t recovering from. They tried to get her stabilized so they could transfer her by ambulance to a larger hospital for observation. They couldn’t get her stabilized and had to make the decision to put her into a medically induced coma which required her to be intubated and air lifted to the larger hospital. During her long seizure she had aspirated and ended up with aspiration pneumonia. Because she had seized for so long they discovered her heart had been damaged and her ejection fraction (how hard her heart pumps her blood) had decreased to 20%. Also referred to takotsubos, commonly known as stress cardiomyopathy. She had to remain intubated until they were sure her heart was recovering. Even with her being sedated she kept trying to take out her tube and IVs so they had to put “mittens” on her along with loose restraints.

They did another echo on the afternoon of day 4 to check her heart function and it had recovered to 55%. They were able to start lowering her sedation so they could extubate her. Once they reduced her sedation she became agitated and somehow managed to pull out her intubation tube herself. She was still very agitated because she didn’t remember anything that had happened.

She had to stay in the ICU for the night to make sure her lungs and heart were strong enough and also on seizure watch.

it took most of the day and the next morning for her to become more coherent.

she was then moved to the neurology floor for 24 hours to make sure sincer her sedation was removed that she didn’t have any more seizures. The next morning (Day 6) she saw the hospitalist and he agreed to discharge her from the hospital.

She has been working hard to become independent. She is eligible for Medicaid and that’s it as far as public assistance. She has been without a license since 2023 due to a seizure then. She has been jumping the states hoops as well as dealing with additional seizure activity and episodes that continue to set her back. She has been denied for social security since graduating (July 2023 was her last ss check) due to “not enough seizure presence.”

She has attempted a few job environments to maintain her independence. The factory environment was a struggle due to increased mild seizure activity.

She started at DQ in Morrison 2024, working every chance she had. She worked her own schedule and any other times someone called off or needed their shift covered. She is dedicated to working and remaining independent.

In June 2025 she was able to get her own apartment.

She is currently off work for a minimum of 3 weeks and she will have to start back slow, meaning her only income will majorly be decreased when she does get back.

Any funds donated will go to help her pay bills and remain independent while also focusing on her recovery.
