Hey everyone! My name is Lora. I am starting this go fund me for my niece Khloe and my sister Michelle, her husband Shawn and my nephew Emmett. Khloe has had a rough few days, since she had to fly to New York to have surgery for her scoliosis.
Unfortunately, Khloe suffered a spinal cord injury during phase two of her surgery Thursday April 6th, 2023. Due to the severity of her curve, getting her spinal cord decompressed was extremely difficult. During the process, her neurological test showed that she lost the ability to use her legs. They woke her up during surgery and after getting her spinal cord free, the neurological transmission signal came back positive. They are hoping that she will regain full functionality of her legs, but her left arm really took the brunt of it. They knew this was a risk with her surgery, but it's a hard pill to swallow. The plan moving forward, depending on how she progresses after phase 3, is for her to be transferred to Children's Hospital in Omaha and then to Madonna for extensive therapy and rehab.
Michelle has been lucky enough to be able to work remotely while in New York with Khloe, but with how the first surgery went, Khloe is unable to move well. She cannot get herself a drink of water, she can't turn herself when she's uncomfortable and even though she is in ICU, a nurse is not by her bedside 24/7, meaning Michelle is doing a lot of these basic cares for Khloe, that we all take for granted. Michelle does not know going forward if she will be able to work remotely while also caring for Khloe. Michelle and Shawn also have a 2 yr old Emmett, that has not physically seen mom in over a month. This fundraiser is to help them make ends meet in the coming months of Khloe's rehab. Any little bit helps! Keep up to date with Khloe's progress on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1060029834655584/?ref=share&mibextid=jf9HGS
Madonna day 1: 4/20/2023
They weren't messing around when they said 3 hours of therapy daily. Khloe had her evaluations this morning and they went great. Current recommendations suggest her staying here for three to four weeks before her next surgery in New York City. She had a shower this morning with Occupational Therapy that didn't go the greatest. She really struggles with pain when she is sitting up, but she mustered through and got it done. She got a surprise when our neighbors, Chris Rosane and Bob had flowers delivered. It sure made her day and gave her motivation before physical therapy this afternoon. She was able to stand independently and took 12 steps on her own!!! I am so proud of her courage, strength and determination. She never ceases to amaze me. ❤️
We are hoping she will be cleared for pool therapy by Dr. Lenkes team soon and she is ready to be more active. The staff here is absolutely amazing. I am going home tomorrow for a week and my dad is going to come stay with Khloe. When Emmett left yesterday, he kept telling me, "no bye-bye mom". Balancing my time between my kids is important as he has only seen me one day in the last 5 and a half weeks. I know Khloe is in the best hands while I'm home and am thankful it's only 3 hours away. Keep the thoughts and prayers coming. We definitely see God's work first hand.
Thank you all for your donations and prayers!
