Emma Grace, 22 year old nursing student, daughter, twin and sister is facing a challenge of a lifetime. Just a few months ago, she was diagnosed with spinal cancer. This beautiful and caring young woman needs our help.
In 2019 Emma experienced weakness in her leg and an MRI showed a large tumor on her spinal cord that was causing nerve damage. It needed to be removed as soon as possible so her mom, Judy, did the unthinkable...she dropped her daughter off at the hospital during a pandemic and waited in the parking lot for five hours for the phone call to say that surgery was successful.
After a long summer of recovery Emma headed back to school to continue working on her nursing degree at the University of New England (UNE) where she has been recognized for her academic excellence and as a Mitchell Scholar.
But in late 2020 she began experiencing numbness in her back. This time the MRI showed new multiple malignant lesions in her spinal column and she was diagnosed with Multifocal Myxopapilloma Emendymoma, a very rare cancer that is expected to reoccur throughout her lifetime.
Emma and her mom Judy are making weekly trips to Mass General for daily proton radiation therapy. This is a six week treatment that will be followed by ongoing medication, physical therapy and regular MRIs.
Here's the scoop - Emma is losing her second summer of income as is her mom who is with her every step of the way. Insurance is already putting up a fight for covering the incredibly expensive treatment. Driving from Maine to Boston and staying there costs money. Additionally, Emma is covering all of her expenses of attending college.
Here's what you can do - Let's relieve some of the financial pressure. Give what you can. Then come back later and give some more because the impact of Emma's cancer will not be over quickly.
Please share her story. Post this link on social media and let people know how you know Emma or Judy and why you care.
