Ms. Godley's Hair & Fashion Club

In this current climate of virtual learning, I thought it was more important than ever to celebrate, cultivate, and educate our young women and men of color by starting an extracurricular club that heavily promotes self-confidence, cultural awareness, unity, and acceptance. So far, I have about 20-25 students show up after the academic school day for an hour and a half on Fridays and I am expecting more once the world is safe for us to return to in-person instruction. The students who attend currently range from  7th-11th grade.

What we do: Any and everything that involves hair and fashion. DIY projects, creating YouTube channels, product reviews, planning virtual events, engaging in conversations about beauty and fashion trends, self-confidence, and introducing different career paths

Mission Statement: To create a space where students celebrate Black & Brown cultures, swap ideas, gain confidence & build friendships!

*This club is open to all students regardless of racial and/or cultural differences. This club welcomes diversity as it provides a table for rich discussion, understanding, and acceptance.*

The Problem: Because we are virtual it is harder to do a lot of hands-on work and most of my students' families do not have the financial means to purchase extra supplies for an after-school club to help them execute some of the projects that I assign.

Our Solution: Rewarding my students with mannequin heads and other beauty supplies will allow them to practice at home with real human hair instead of having to ask someone at home to experiment. They will also learn how to sew, knit, and make vision boards! A lot of my students have dreams of becoming cosmetologists and fashion designers so this club is a perfect opportunity for them to get a head start before they step into their post-secondary dreams and careers.

However, this is only the beginning. Once school is safely back in session next school year, I plan to host events and to be able to take my students on trips to learn about different options in the beauty and fashion industry that is out there for them!

Where will the money go?

My students took a survey and these are the most requested items that are needed for our club:

-  Black Mannequin dolls with human textured hair

- A copy of The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care by Audrey Davis

- Magazines / Glue / Scissors

- Combs

- Brushes

-  Beads

- Hair ties/rubber bands

- Pack of braiding hair

- mini sewing kits

-knitting needles

-yarn
