Penny has been in a nursing home for a couple months and will be there through March. She had a problem w/her leg which turned into a complicated break that needed surgery. She was in and out of the hospital and eventually returned to the nursing home. As you may already know, Penny also has Diabetes and is losing her sight. Life has not been easy for her over the past few years.
Unfortunately, the Monday before Christmas, Penny was informed that her Medicare benefits for this nursing home stay were being cancelled as of Christmas Eve. She was informed that she either had to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket or leave. She had nowhere to go because she is not allowed to put any weight on her leg until March, and couldn’t care for herself at home. I found this unconscionable, especially informing her two days before she would have had to leave AND immediately before Christmas. In addition, her sister, who has been very ill, died during this time. This left Penny’s family unable to help in ways that they might have without this difficult loss. The nursing home also suggested that she sell her condo, go on public aid, and go into a nursing home paid for by public aid. This would have left Penny without a home when she was able to leave the nursing home. Penny was able to pay a small amount that enabled her to stay for a while. However, the bills continue to rise.
If you are reading this, Penny has touched your life in some way over the last 40 years. She has given so much to so many of us, without expecting anything in return. Since Penny has always worked for agencies within the Catholic Church, she never had much money and has very little savings. The cost of being in this nursing home is beyond her capacity to pay without using all her small savings and then having to put the rest on credit cards until they top out. So, here’s the request:
I’ve set up this fund for Penny so those of us who know, love, and care about Penny can help by donating whatever amount we are able. Any little bit will help. You will be forever blessed and Penny will be forever grateful.
Thanks for whatever you can do to help this wonderful woman who has been a inspiration to so many!
