Send Our Professional Practices Class to NYC for the 2015 Armory Show!
We are a group of students enrolled in the Kinetic Imaging Department of Virginia Commonwealth University. Professional Practices is a course offered through the department and it focuses on teaching electronic and media arts students how to effectively navigate the fine art world. Pro Practice’s capstone unit includes a 5-day, 4 night trip to New York City during Armory Week. The previous two years have been so successful that the class has grown to a much larger size, and so part of our curriculum this semester includes learning how to launch and manage fundraising efforts such as this one.
The purpose of our trip to Armory Week in Manhattan is to experience The Armory Show, an influential art fair that will allow us not only to see the most important contemporary works of the 21st century, but also artists working in their practice. This first-hand experience is crucial to our education because it will give us insight to what we can potentially accomplish as media fine artists after college in a real life context. The trip offers full immersion into the kinetic fine art world through interactive and installation exhibitions, experiencing alternative art spaces, and visiting studios of emerging artists.
The Kinetic Imaging Department has kindly provided funding for the cost of transportation to and from New York. However, staying in Manhattan for four nights is expensive, and we need your help. Our professor found a hostel with a great price, and our goal is to offset cost and simultaneously learn to manage art-related group funding. Funds received from this campaign will go towards our lodging. For example, a donation of $50 will cover the cost of one night in the hostel for one student. We’re all really looking forward to this amazing learning experience. All we need is a little help from you for it to become a reality.
