Surprisingly I enjoyed the last half marathon, and I have decided to do it again and will be running the Woking Half Marathon on the 6th of March 2022. Somehow, I have convinced a few of my friends to run it with me, providing another excellent opportunity to raise some money for some fantastic charities carrying out meaningful projects that make a substantial difference.

 

As there will be 5 of us running, it has opened an opportunity to raise money for two separate charities. The proceeds will be split equally between the two charities.

 

The first charity is Shree Indreni Shivalaya Child Development Centre which is my dad’s charity based in his home village of Damek, Baglung. Its primary focus is providing educational opportunities for children, which remains a huge issue and a neglected area, more prevalent in the rural parts of Nepal. In 2012, they were successfully able to open a school, opening doors for children in the village to be able to have a proper education and allow them to realise their full potential. The money being raised will go towards new books, stationery, maintenance of school facilities and wages for the teachers due to a substantial lack of government funding.

 

The second charity we’ll be supporting is the Gurkha Welfare Trust, which provides financial, medical and developmental aid to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities. As Nepal lacks an effective public social welfare system, the work of the GWT is crucial in improving conditions for veterans and their dependents who are often without a steady income as they are unable to work due to age, illness or injury. Today, the trust pays a monthly stipend to 4500 veterans and widows in Nepal who do not receive a military pension as they had not served the 15 years needed to qualify for an army pension. 

 

On top of their work for Veterans, the trust is also invested in broader community projects such as the Rural Water & Sanitation Programme, bringing safe drinking water and improved hygiene to villages throughout Nepal. To date, over 300,000 people in around 1,400 villages have benefited from the Trust's water projects. Their School Programme undertakes builds, repairs and refurbishes schools as part of its commitment to developing rural educational facilities. To date, It has built 137 new schools and runs an extensive renovation programme for dilapidated schools, improving access to education for over 550,000 Nepali children since the programme began in 1989.
